As a freelance teacher working with ConnecTee, here are the key things you need to know regarding invoicing and tax obligations in Portugal:
Invoicing
You will issue an invoice each month for the services provided, with our invoicing tool XX based on:
The total number of hours worked + Travel expenses, if applicable
VAT Exemption
In 2025, you are exempt from VAT (IVA) if your annual turnover is below €15,000.
If you don’t exceed this limit—and don't expect to—you are also exempt from withholding IRS tax at source.
Social Security (Segurança Social)
First-time freelancers: You are exempt from Social Security contributions for the first 12 months of activity.
If you are also employed elsewhere (with a formal contract): You may continue to be exempt after the first year if:

Your income from your other job is equal to or above €522.50/month

Income Calculation (for Social Security)

Your relevant income is based on 70% of the total invoiced amount over the previous 3 months.
